Service
Social Concerns Ministries
The U. S. Catholic Bishops, faithful to the long tradition of Catholic social teaching, declared that Catholic communities are measured not only by how well they celebrate the sacraments, but also by how well they serve the hungry, the homeless, the sick, those in prison and the stranger. In addition to works of charity and outreach, working for peace and justice are essential to parish life.
Catholic teaching calls us to serve those in need and to change the structures that deny people their dignity and rights as children of God. Service and action, charity and justice are complementary components of social ministry.
The St. Thomas More Newman Center responds to this call through Food for the Homeless ministries, and through justice and outreach ministries.
The Social Concerns team encourages all members of the Newman Center community to "live their faith in the world, understanding and acting upon the social dimensions of the Gospel in their everyday lives."
