New Roman Missal

What is the New Roman Missal?

The Roman Missal contains the official texts used for the celebration of the Mass throughout the universal Roman Catholic Church. In the original, the Roman Missal is one book. In the United States we make separate use the of two sections: the Sacramentary and the Lectionary. The Sacramentary contains all of the prayers and instructions necessary for the celebration of the Mass and is the book that the priest uses. The Lectionary is a book of selections from Sacred Scripture to be proclaimed at liturgies. These readings are not random selections. They are carefully chosen to serve the paschal mystery dynamic of the liturgical year.

What did we do to prepare for the changes?

During the spring of 2011, we offered three introductory information sessions for close to a hundred participants in regards to the new Roman Missal. In July and October we offered a series we called Liturgy 301: A Look at How We Celebrate Mass. Both series of classes were well received, with over a hundred total participants.

In October there was a presentation by the music ministry of several of the new potential musical Mass settings. The Mass parts we are presently using were chosen by those in attendance.

For the immediate future, all of the assembly's responses will be projected on the screen.

Why do we need a new translation?
