New Roman Missal

On Aug. 20, 2010, Cardinal Francis George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago and President of the USCCB, announced that the date of implementation for the use of the new Roman Missal in the dioceses of the United States of America will be Nov. 27, 2011 (the first Sunday of Advent). This new translation, the first in more than 40 years, will have an effect on all Roman Catholics who celebrate the Mass in the English language.

During the interim, preparations will be made for the printing and publication of the new Sacramentary, the book with all of the necessary prayers used to celebrate the Mass. Also during this time campus ministries, parishes and other worshiping communities will develop educational opportunities in regards to: the history of the liturgy; the role of the presider and the assembly at liturgy; and what is involved or changed in regards to the new Roman Missal.

For more information and to see some sample texts of the new translation, go to the USCCB website on the new Roman Missal. The majority of changes involved in the new Roman Missal will affect the priest/presider parts of the Mass. A sample text of the potential changes for the assembly can be seen here; clergy/presider changes can be seen here.

The Notre Dame Center for Liturgy offers some short (approximately 15 minutes in length) web-based materials by liturgical experts that you may find helpful in understanding this process.

As more information and catechetical material is made available, we will post information and opportunities to participate in catechetical (educational) sessions. Please check back from time-to-time.
