Muslim-Catholic Dialogue Group

The Newman Center's Muslim-Catholic Dialogue Group meets every Wednesday during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters when OSU is in session at 7:30 p.m. in the O'Brien Conference Room. Our purpose is to promote learning, growth, understanding, and renewal of our faith communities, as well as get to know people of other faiths while discussing what we hold in common and what is unique in our faith traditions. No prior experience in interfaith dialogue is needed, except an openness to listen, learn, and a willingness to share your faith.

Given the climate of the world today, with growing intolerance, misunderstanding, and common misrepresentation of people of all faiths, we believe that dialogue, with its direct personal contact, is the surest means of peacemaking. Our discussions are honest, direct, and fun.

Some of our recent topics have included:

  • Christianity 101 - Islam 101
  • Stereotypes: Who do you think we are?
  • Who is God for us?
  • How do you pray? Why do you pray?
  • How do religion and politics interact?
  • What's the role of women in our faiths?
  • What's it like to be a Muslim in America?
  • How do you understand marriage?
  • How does culture and national idenity affect belief and practice?
  • Who's in charge? What or who is the authority for your faith?
  • Sharing an Iftar dinner during Ramadan
  • Sharing a traditional Thanksgiving dinner

This group is primarily for OSU students, but other community members have also participated in the past. Please join us if you would like to know more.  Our first dialogue session in the fall will be held on Oct. 6.
