Eucharistic Ministry

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion most often assist in the distribution of the Body and Blood of the Lord at Sunday and daily Mass. They also have the opportunity to bring Holy Communion to those who are hospitalized or shut-in.

Training sessions for those who are interested in being a extraordinary minister of Holy Communion at the Newman Center are offered on a regular basis. This training is for those who have been ministers in other parishes and are now part of the Newman Center community, as well as for those who are interested in becoming involved in this ministry.

Fall 2010 training sessions will be held on Monday, October 4 @ 7:30 p.m. OR Sunday, October 10 @ 7:15 p.m. You need to attend ONE of the two sessions.

Contact Fr. Chuck for more information.

Ministry to the Sick

Members of the Newman Center community participate in Christ's healing ministry as a volunteer who brings Holy Communion to Catholic patients at The Ohio State Medical Center; where many of the patients are from out of town and visitors are few during the week. Sunday through Friday volunteers bring Holy Communion or offer a prayer with assigned patients. Visits are made in the afternoon or early evening. The time commitment is about 2 hours once a month and Communion ministers are not expected to handle difficult situations or provide counseling.

Previous experience with patients may be helpful, but is not required. Training is offered and orientation is provided. A pot luck gathering at the Newman Center once per quarter offers support and sharing for those who participate in this ministry.

Comments from those serving in this ministry:

"I had a wonderful day ministering today. I always leave the hospital feeling rewarded and blessed."

"One of the patients indicated she had not been to Communion in a very long time. On her previous stay, she related to the Communion Minister that she had been thinking about returning to the sacraments and the person suggested that she continue to think about it, God is always waiting on us. She said she continued to think and pray, and she could receive Holy Communion. It was a special moment"
