Environmental Stewardship

The Environmental Stewardship Group is a group of resident and student community that meets regularly to discuss and provide educational opportunities, services and events for the Newman Center and the community that surround environmental issues. As a group, we examine environmental issues through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching as we are called to care for God’s creation. For example, in the fall of 2008, we hosted the Hundred Dollar Holiday Idea Fair. The premise of this event was to refocus the community's Christmas giving on gifts of their time and themselves, rather than amount of money spent. We had booths that covered everything from environmentally friendly gifts and reducing waste to low-cost and homemade gifts.

Our mission is to bring the Newman Center community ways to live out Catholic Social Teaching by being good stewards of the environment. We do this through:

  • Promoting awareness of environmental issues
  • Providing services, and events and activities for the Newman Center community for care of creation
  • Empowering the community to make environmentally responsible and informed choices

How to get involved:
You can support us through your prayer, by participating in events, volunteering, or helping plan some of our activities.

What we’re doing to make the Newman Center more “green”?

  • The light bulbs in the newer sections of the building are compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) which are low energy and last longer than normal bulbs. As others burn out, they are replaced with these new light bulbs
  • Paper, plastic, glass and aluminum can be recycled in the bins behind the Newman Center in addition to the receptacles located throughout the building
  • The Newman Center has an agreement with a nearby business to share parking lots while one is in use and the other is not
  • Many students and residents are able to walk, ride bikes, carpool and take public transportation to the Newman Center
  • Fr. Larry drives a hybrid

What’s next?

  • Find new ways to reduce the Newman Center’s environmental footprint
  • Continue replacing incandescent light bulbs with CFLs or LEDs
  • Purchase environmentally responsible products
  • Promote awareness of environmental issues
  • Get an energy audit
